Botox for expression lines
How Botox Works
Botox Cosmetic contains onabotulinumtoxinA and has approved cosmetic uses in adults. It temporarily reduces activity in selected muscles, making certain lines caused by repeated facial movement less noticeable. Common upper-face treatment areas include frown lines between the eyebrows, forehead lines and crow's feet beside the eyes.
We consider how your face moves, your anatomy and the changes you want. Botox reduces selected muscle activity; filler adds volume. Lines that remain when your face is at rest may need a different treatment.
For these upper-face lines, the manufacturer describes changes beginning in one to two days, full results at about 30 days and effects lasting up to four months. Individual response varies. Brow-lift requests need a separate assessment and may involve use outside the product's approved indications.
This page covers cosmetic treatment. Botox for chronic migraine or other medical conditions involves a separate assessment and treatment plan. Read our guide to cosmetic Botox and migraine treatment.
Dermal fillers
How Dermal Fillers Work
Dermal fillers are injected beneath the skin to add volume or improve selected folds and contours. Ample offers hyaluronic acid filler options from product families such as Juvederm and Restylane. These families contain different formulations; a brand name alone does not tell you which area or age group a product is approved to treat.
Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in the body, but injectable filler still has medical risks. We choose the product and amount based on the area, your anatomy and the change you want to discuss.
Areas to discuss
Lips, cheeks and facial folds
Depending on the product, filler may be used for lip volume, cheek fullness or folds from the nose toward the mouth. Approved uses and age limits differ by product. Ask which formulation we recommend and what it can change.
A separate assessment
Under-eye hollows
Some specific fillers have FDA approval for under-eye hollows. This does not apply to every filler or every concern around the eyes. Hollowing, bags, pigmentation and swelling need different assessments; under-eye treatment is not suitable for everyone.
Examples with an under-eye indication include Juvederm Volbella XC and Restylane Eyelight. These examples explain product differences; they do not confirm that a particular formulation is available at Ample. Ask about current options at your consultation.
We begin with an in-person consultation. Bring your health history, medicine and allergy lists, and details of previous injections. We discuss the areas you want treated, benefits, risks, alternatives and costs.
01
Discuss your goals
Tell us which areas concern you and about previous procedures or reactions. We examine facial movement before discussing treatment.
02
Review the product and areas
We explain the exact product, treatment areas, expected changes and aftercare before you consent to treatment.
03
Arrange treatment and follow-up
If treatment is appropriate, we confirm the timing and preparation. Ask whether a procedure can be planned for the consultation visit.
A needle or cannula may be used for filler, and some products contain lidocaine. Ask about numbing and tell us about any anesthetic allergy. The appointment includes assessment and preparation as well as the injections; call to ask how much time to allow.
Ask who will perform the procedure, their training for the treatment area and how to reach us afterward. Bring records of injections or procedures done elsewhere.
Botox Cosmetic should not be given with an infection at the proposed injection site or a known allergy to a botulinum toxin preparation or its ingredients. Fillers have their own restrictions, including certain severe allergies and ingredient sensitivities. Active skin inflammation or infection can mean postponing treatment.
Tell the clinician about muscle or nerve conditions, swallowing or breathing difficulties, previous facial surgery, prior injectable products and any unusual reaction. Include pregnancy, plans for pregnancy and breastfeeding. Safety data are limited or not established in some of these situations, depending on the product.
Bring every prescription, over-the-counter medicine and supplement you take. Blood thinners and some other medicines can increase bruising or bleeding. Do not stop prescribed medication without speaking with the clinician who manages it.
Soreness, redness, swelling and bruising can occur. Fillers may also cause tenderness, firmness or lumps; some reactions can appear later. Botox can cause effects such as headache or eyelid or brow drooping. These examples do not cover every possible reaction.
Many people resume routine activities, but downtime varies. Ask for written, product-specific instructions about exercise, heat, alcohol, makeup and touching the treated area. For example, Juvederm's instructions advise minimizing strenuous exercise, extensive sun or heat, and alcohol for the first 24 hours. Your exact instructions depend on the product and treatment site.
Allow time for swelling or bruising to settle before an important event. Contact us if symptoms worsen or recovery is not going as expected.
Filler can accidentally enter a blood vessel and cause tissue damage, blindness or stroke. Seek immediate medical attention for unusual or severe pain, vision changes, or white, gray or blue skin near the injection area. Call 911 for sudden vision loss, stroke symptoms or trouble breathing. Do not wait for an online message to be answered.
Botulinum toxin effects can spread beyond the injection area. Get immediate medical help for trouble swallowing, speaking or breathing after Botox; these symptoms can occur hours to weeks later. Call 911 for breathing difficulty or other severe symptoms. Do not drive if you develop weakness, vision problems or dizziness.
Botox and fillers take different amounts of time to settle. We will explain when to check the result and when to arrange follow-up.
General timing differences between cosmetic Botox and hyaluronic acid fillers
Treatment
When changes appear
How long effects may last
Botox Cosmetic Upper-face expression lines
Changes may begin in one to two days. The manufacturer describes full results at about 30 days.
Up to four months for the upper-face lines described here. Your response may differ.
Hyaluronic acid filler
Volume changes may be seen soon after treatment, but swelling can obscure the settled result.
Depends on the formulation, area and treatment. Some Juvederm products have effects studied for one to two years with optimal treatment; that is not a duration promise for every filler.
Your clinician will recommend when to review the result and whether further treatment makes sense. Keep the product name and treatment record. If you are unhappy with a result, contact the practice before seeking more injections elsewhere. Filler reduction or removal can require additional procedures and has its own risks.
Ample provides cosmetic injectable care in the same West Hartford office as its primary and urgent care services. Dr. Mojdeh Heidari, DNP, FNP-C, is the founder and a family nurse practitioner. Treatment is provided or directly supervised by Dr. Heidari.
We review your health, treatment plan, aftercare and follow-up during the consultation. Tell us about new medicines or procedures done elsewhere, even if you are already an Ample patient. New patients are welcome.
Cosmetic Botox and fillers are self-pay services at Ample. Call for the consultation fee and a treatment estimate. The product, amount and areas treated affect the cost.
Ask what the quote includes, how the product amount is measured and whether follow-up or additional treatment has a separate fee. Botox units are specific to the product and cannot simply be converted to units of a different botulinum toxin product.
Cosmetic and therapeutic Botox have different treatment and billing considerations. A medical indication such as chronic migraine needs a separate assessment and plan-specific coverage review.
Botox Cosmetic temporarily reduces activity in selected muscles to soften certain expression lines. Dermal fillers add volume beneath the skin. They address different concerns, and some people may be candidates for one, both or neither after assessment.
Will Botox make my face look frozen?
The effect depends on the treatment plan, your anatomy and muscle movement. Tell us how much movement you want to keep and what changes you hope to see. We will discuss what treatment may achieve; a particular appearance cannot be guaranteed.
Can Botox and filler be done during the same visit?
Sometimes, but that decision follows your medical review and facial assessment. The combination, treatment areas and timing need to be appropriate for you. Request a consultation first; the office will confirm whether a procedure can be planned for that visit.
Is under-eye filler right for dark circles or puffiness?
Not necessarily. Hollows, skin color, bags and swelling are different problems. Some specific fillers are approved for under-eye hollows, but not every filler or patient is suitable. Ask which product is proposed, its approved use and the risks before proceeding.
Can I have cosmetic injections while pregnant or breastfeeding?
Tell the clinician if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy or breastfeeding before booking treatment. Safety data are limited or not established for these situations, depending on the product. Elective cosmetic treatment may be postponed after the clinical review.
Should I stop aspirin or a blood thinner before treatment?
Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own. Bring a full medication and supplement list. Some products can increase bruising or bleeding, and any change should be discussed with the clinician who prescribes that medicine.
Are hyaluronic acid fillers risk-free or fully reversible?
No. Hyaluronic acid fillers can still cause serious complications. Reducing or removing filler may require additional treatment with its own risks, and complete reversal is not guaranteed. Discuss the exact product and the plan for managing complications before treatment.
